Refurbished Bike Care and Info

Thank you for choosing to purchase your refurbished bike from us

The information on this page is intended to help keep your bike in a safe and rideable condition for as long as possible.

Disclaimer

Due to the previously used condition of the bike, wear and tear or faults may appear sooner that you would expect from a new bike. It is your responsibility to take care of your bike and your personal safety.

‘A, B, C’ Check

To ensure safe riding we recommend completing, at minimum, an ‘A, B, C’ check at the start of every ride.

A = Air. Is the pressure in your tyres adequate for your weight and riding terrain?
B = Brakes. Do your brakes work? Check the front and rear brakes one at a time
C = Chain. Is your chain clean, rust free, and moves smoothly through the gears?

Whilst cycling, you may have noticed further issues with your bike. When you come home from your ride, take a note of the issues found and complete a full ‘M check’ of your bike to diagnose any mechanical faults with the bike. You can then utilise our Fix Your Own Bike sessions, or book your bike in for a service at a local bike shop

THE ‘M’ CHECK

Tips for your bike to last as long as possible

  • Store your bike out of the rain where possible
  • Clean your bike when it gets dirty. If the roads have been gritted, pay extra attention to cleaning your drive train
  • Always dry and oil your chain after you have cleaned your bike to prevent rust
  • Check your tyre pressure regularly and inflate to the appropriate PSI for your weight and riding terrain

Service Schedule

The service schedule for your bike will depend on the conditions you ride your bike in, and the number of miles your ride. This table is a rough guide for how many weeks you should go between services if you are riding in Fort William. It assumes your bicycle is kept in a dry (not damp) garage or shed and you ride with a degree of mechanical sympathy

‘Looked after’ category descriptions:

Not Well: assumes that tyres are pumped up when needed and brakes and steering are checked for function regularly (≈ 150 miles)

Okay: assumes that, as well as the above, the bike is also cleaned and oiled when it gets pretty grimy and that it is safety checked periodically (≈300miles)

Very well: assumes the bike is cleaned, dried and oiled after every ride (the text on your chain is always legible). Tyre pressures, brake performance and steering function are checked before each ride. All accessible moving parts (jockey wheels, derailleur pivots, cables, rim brake pivots, barrel adjusters) are lubricated periodically.
